One of the worst things for a technician is when a customer doesn’t tell you everything they should when they bring in their car. SureTrack community member MECHANICAUTO had a Honda Odyssey in the shop that had the flashers coming on when using the turn signals. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member ericsautomotive and JimA, they were able to resolve the issue quickly. ericsautomotive calls the problem “Stereo Boy” syndrome.

Vehicle
2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5L

Title
Flashers come on when turning on blinkers, corrected trailer wiring.

Complaint
Customer complains that 4-way flashers come on when using the turn signals.

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
When using the turn signals, the 4-way flashers come on. Tested the hazard/turn signal relay and it is ok. Tested the hazard switch and it is ok. No other faults found.

Cause
The owner’s husband installed a tow harness and had the wires crossed and connected together causing the all the bulbs to flash when the turn signal was operated.

Correction
Corrected trailer tow wiring, turn signals and flashers now operate properly.
