Once again a generic code description requires looking for the fault with good old-fashioned diagnostics procedures. Follow this Real Fix to see how code P1574 was diagnosed and repaired on this 2003 Chevrolet Silverado with a manual transmission.

P1574, Replaced Clutch Pedal Position Switch

Complaint
The customer states the check engine light is on.

Cause
Connected a scan tool and found code P1574 – Rapid Vehicle Speed Decrease. With the key on, engine off, used the scan tool to monitor live data and depressed the brake pedal. found the brake light switch parameter changed state when the brake pedal was depressed. With the key on, engine off, used the scan tool to monitor live data and depressed the clutch pedal. Found the clutch pedal position switch parameter did not change state when the clutch pedal was depressed. Inspected the clutch pedal position switch connector and terminals and found no faults. With the key on, engine off, used the scan tool to monitor live data, connected a jumper wire across the clutch pedal position switch harness connector terminals and observed the clutch pedal position switch parameter changed state. These test results verified the clutch pedal position switch was faulty.

Correction
Replaced the clutch pedal position switch, cleared codes, performed a road test and verified the vehicle operated properly. The check engine light did not illuminate and no fault codes returned.
