When you’re not familiar with a particular engine, it’s great to get help from experts. And the SureTrack Community is ready to help. SureTrack community member Nhaugen had a GMC Sierra Duramax diesel in the shop that wouldn’t start. Since they weren’t that familiar with these engines, they posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member Dmckemie12 and others, they were able to resolve the issue.

No start, replaced fuel pump and injectors.

Customer complains that truck died and will not restart.
Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Customer said truck was idling and died and that it cranks but will not fire. Replaced fuel filter and primed. Got engine started and at 160 RPM, fuel rail pressure actual .4mpa, desired is 45mpa. Unplugged FRP and with key on, engine off, FRP goes high. I do not have the Duramax fuel tester. I have one ordered but it’s a week away. Very unfamiliar with the Duramax. Not sure if I have a bad regulator bleeding pressure off a bad fuel pressure regulator (FPR), or a bad fuel pump.

Pull the FPR on the pump and see if it has metal on the screen, if it does you need a pump. I’ve seen plenty of injectors return too much, but .4Mpa while cranking is really low, like not pumping low.
Cause
Pulled the FPR out and the screen had metal shavings on it.
Correction
Replaced fuel pump and injectors, cleaned FPR screen. Vehicle now starts and runs as it should.
