SureTrack Community Fix: Get a Grip

DPF Pressure Sensor

Remember when you pulled a lever, or stepped on a pedal to set the parking brake? Electronic parking brakes have proliferated through the automotive industry introducing another system to diagnose. SureTrack community member HHBA1 had a Mazda CX-5 that was setting parking brake codes and they were going down the path of replacing the module. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member Markbob, and others, they were able to resolve the issue quickly.

The following Real Fix summarizes the interaction between them in the community that led to the solution.

Vehicle
2016 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5L

Title
Electronic parking brake sets codes, replaced caliper.

Complaint
Customer complains that parking brake is not working.

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Connected scan tool and found right rear actuator codes C2005 and C112a. Parking brake works a couple of times and then stops moving and sets these codes. Clear codes and it’ll work again for 1 or 2 tries and then stops working and sets codes again. Swapped parking brake actuator with a known good one and the problem remained the same. Dealer told customer to replace the battery with an AC Delco (not sure why). They replaced battery with a Duralast and then brought it to us. Customer stated that they were having the same problem. Thinking it needs an Electronic Parking Brake Module but was concerned with unknowns. Anyone have any experience with these same issues?

Was your known good part a caliper and actuator, or just the actuator? The caliper itself can cause this code. You can get the caliper by itself with no actuator from Mazda. I would try that first, unless you can prove the module is bad.

Cause
Took off the actuator and manually turned the parking brake on the caliper, Found a stiff spot in the screw action.

Correction
Got new caliper and manually actuated the parking brake and found it worked as it should. Installed new caliper on vehicle and tested parking
