SureTrack Community Fix: Intermittent Blower

DPF Pressure Sensor

Here’s another mid-summer air conditioning issue. And this time the customer did not tell the shop that they had already replaced some parts. SureTrack community member juniur had a Ford Edge in their shop where the air conditioner blower wouldn’t keep blowing. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member jhirz and others, they were able to resolve the issue.

The following Real Fix summarizes the interaction between them in the community that led to the solution.

Title
Air conditioning blower stops intermittently.

Complaint
Customer complains that when running the air conditioner, the blower motor will run for a while and then stop and then starts up on its own again.

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Checked HVAC operation and confirmed that blower will stop intermittently and then start again. A/C pressure switch has been replaced. Vehicle harness to HVAC harness connector replaced due to loose terminals. No codes in any module (now that I’ve replaced a/c pressure switch). This morning I have DTC B10b9-14, blower control circuit short to ground or open.

Cause
Got more info from customer and they told me they had already replaced the blower relay. The relay is hot to the touch. Installed a jumper wire and amp meter and the blower is drawing 20 amps. With the relay jumped the blower tripped my 30amp circuit breaker. High amp draw of the blower is causing the issues.

Correction
Replaced blower and now drawing 13 amps. Also the new relay as it was defective. Air conditioning system now operating as it should.
