Modern vehicles have very sensitive electrical systems and are generally made to work with OEM components. Sometimes aftermarket components can cause issues. SureTrack community member SHORTWRECKERMAN had a Chevrolet Tahoe in the shop where the cruise control would turn off when the headlights were turned on. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member dmckemie12 and others, they were able to resolve the issue quickly.

The following Community Fix summarizes the interaction between members of the community that led to the solution.

Vehicle
2005 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L

Title
Cruise control cuts off, replaced taillights.

Complaint
Customer states that the cruise control turns off when the headlights are turned on.

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Road tested vehicle and confirmed that cruise control disconnects when the headlights are turned on. Replaced multifunction switch and did not correct the condition. What could cause the cruise control to stop when turning on the lights?

Best Answer from Community Member dmckemie12
An insufficient ground for the stop/tail light bulbs could cause that. If there is a trailer brake controller installed, the wiring changed and had various problems.

Cause
The taillights had been changed to LED and this caused the problem, they did not have the resister in them.

Correction
Replaced taillights and cruise control no longer cuts off when turning on the lights.
