Vehicles today come with more and more screens and when a blank one is staring you in the face, you may not no where to start testing. SureTrack community member grizz81 had a GMC Terrain SUV in the shop where the radio and touch screen weren’t working. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member Dmckemie12 and others, they were able to resolve the issue quickly.

Radio and touch screen do not work, replaced module.

Customer complains that the radio does not work and that the control screen is blank.

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Checked customer’s complaint and found that the radio does not operate at all and display touch screen is blank. Checked for communication codes, none. Pulled the radio fuse for 5 minutes and reinstalled. Still doesn’t work. Unplugged antenna lead to radio and replugged with no change. Can communicate to all modules with scan tool. Can pull up radio data and software versions with scan tool. Verified power and ground on both components previously.

The radio is a separate module from the radio/HVAC controls. I have replaced dozens of the controls, which includes the screen, for different issues. It’s very possible to be able to communicate with the radio and it not work because of the control assembly.

Found cause to be faulty radio control module.

Replaced radio control module, programmed unit and radio and touch screen work as they should.
