SureTrack Community Fix: That’s a Stretch

Real Fixes from the SureTrackĀ® expert information resource are documented issues from actual shop repair orders and community discussions. Read on to see how SureTrack can help you correct issues that are not easily diagnosed using OEM information alone. SureTrack is currently available free with the purchase of a current Snap-onĀ® diagnostic software version.

Sometimes you get a customer who does not want to spend the money to properly diagnose a problem. SureTrack community member EddRSmith had a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado in the shop that had a code P0017 and they came to SureTrack to look for what the most common cause would be. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member ericsautomotive and others, they were able to resolve the issue quickly.

The following Community Fix summarizes the interaction between members of the community that led to the solution.

Vehicle
2007 Chevrolet Colorado 3.7L

Title
Code P0017, replaced timing chain, guides and tensioner.

Complaint
Customer states that the check engine light is on.

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Checked for codes and vehicle has a code P0017. Runs and drives ok. Cleared code but it immediately came back. If I do a cranshaft position sensor relearn the light stays off for a bit but then comes back. Another shop has replaced the VVT solenoid and I pulled it to check the screens and function, and it seems to be working ok. I think its probably the VVT actuator or a stretched timing chain, but is there anything else I should to do verify? Checking timing on this motor requires pulling it apart and customer doesn’t want to do that.

Stretched chain is the #1 cause for the code on this engine.

Cause
Found stretched timing chain.

Correction
Replaced timing chain, guides and tensioner. Vehicle now operates properly and code did not return.
