If you’re not that familiar with Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS) you might wonder why steering angle is important to the function of it. It is used to account for the different wheel speed when turning to keep the system from activating inadvertently. Follow this Real Fix to see how a problem with the clockspring on this Volkswagen Routan triggered the ABS light and how it was repaired.

Vehicle
2011 Volkswagen Routan SE 3.6L

Title
C1219, C123F, C1240, Replaced Steering Wheel Clockspring

Complaint
The customer states the anti-lock brake system (ABS) light is on.

Cause
Connected a scan tool and found codes: C1219 – Steering Angle Sensor Erratic Performance; C123F – Steering Angle Sensor Comparative Performance and C1240 – Steering Angle Sensor Overtravel Performance. Performed a road test while monitoring live scan tool data and observed the steering angle sensor parameter was erratic. Inspected the steering angle sensor wiring harness and connector and found no faults. With the ignition on and the engine off, used a multi-meter to check for the presence of voltage and ground at the steering angle sensor connector and found both were present. With the ignition on and the engine off, turned the steering wheel from lock to lock and found the steering angle sensor parameter was not within the specified range of 720 degrees or less. The results of these tests verified the steering angle sensor was faulty. The steering angle sensor is integrated into the steering wheel clockspring and is replaced as an entire unit.

Correction
Replaced the steering wheel clockspring, cleared codes, performed a road test and verified the vehicle operated properly. The ABS light did not illuminate and no fault codes returned.
