Vehicle
2008 BMW X3 30i 3.0L
Title
5462, 5F3A, Replaced Transfer Case Shift Motor
Complaint
The customer states the traction control system light is on.
Cause
Connected a scan tool and found codes: 5462 – Error Actuator Or Increased Power Requirements For Clutch and 5F3A – Clutch Gearbox-ECU: Clutch Is Open Rear Wheel Drive. With the engine at idle, monitored live scan tool data while shifting the transfer case from two wheel drive to four wheel drive and found the transfer case position was fixed. Inspected the transfer case shift motor wiring harness and connector and detcted no obvious faults. With the ignition on and the engine off, used a multi-meter to check for the presence of voltage and ground at the transfer case shift motor connector and found both were present. Removed the transfer case shift motor and a visual inspection revealed the motor was damaged.
Correction
Replaced the transfer case shift motor, cleared codes, performed a road test and verified the vehicle operated properly.
