Air management is a key part of the engine performance of modern vehicles, with many of them having complex variable intake manifold systems. Follow this Real Fix to see how a code P1004 was diagnosed to find a problem with the plenum chamber.
Vehicle
2007 Chrysler 300 Touring 3.5L
Title
P1004, Replaced Plenum Chamber
Complaint
The customer states the check engine light is on.
Cause
Connected a scan tool and found code P1004 – Short Runner Valve Control Performance. KOEO, used the scan tool to actuate the intake manifold runner control (IMRC) actuator solenoid while monitoring the live data and found the IMRC feedback was outside of the specification range. At idle, used the scan tool to activate and then deactivate the IMRC actuator solenoid and found the IMRC feedback returned to specifications upon deactivating the IMRC actuator solenoid. Key off, removed the IMRC actuator from the engine plenum chamber for inspection purposes, inspected the IMRC actuator and the engine plenum chamber, and found the plenum chamber was damaged, which caused the IMRC actuator to bind.
Correction
Replaced the plenum chamber, cleared codes, performed a road test and verified the vehicle operated properly. The check engine light did not illuminate and no fault codes returned.
