Here’s another case of a seemingly non-related component causing an emissions monitor not to run. SureTrack community member Abasom had a Volkswagen New Beetle in their shop that would not run the secondary air monitor and wasn’t setting any codes. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member DieseltechJon and others, they were able to resolve the issue.
The following Real Fix summarizes the interaction between them in the community that led to the solution.
Vehicle
2007 Volkswagen New Beetle 2.5L
Title
Secondary air monitor will not run, replaced O2 sensor.
Complaint
Secondary air monitor will not run and will not set code. All other monitors run.
Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Checked to make sure control valve is open. Secondary air pump checked out as good. Hoses between pump and valve are hooked up properly. Pump runs on start up. Why is the secondary pump not running, and yet not setting off a code?
Best Answer from Community Member DieseltechJon
Possible front O2 sensor problem? I have had trouble a while back setting secondary air monitor because of slow or faulty front O2 sensor. Might be worth taking a look at.
Cause
Defective O2 sensor.
Correction
Replaced O2 sensor, secondary air monitor now runs.
