A popular modification to diesel trucks is called “rolling coal” which causes them to belch black smoke. But not everyone wants their truck to be an annoyance to the public. Follow this Real Fix to see how a problem with this Ford Super Duty caused it to have unwanted black smoke come from the exhaust.

Vehicle
2003 Ford Pickup F250 Super Duty 6.0L

Title
Black Smoke Comes From Vehicle, Replaced Injector Control Pressure Regulator

Complaint
The customer states there is black smoke coming from the vehicle.

Cause
Confirmed the customer’s complaint and found black smoke came from the vehicle. Test drove the vehicle while monitoring live data on a scan tool and found the fuel injection control pressure (ICP) sensor indicated low fuel pressure. Inspected the ICP sensor wiring and connector, but found no faults. Connected a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail, started the engine and found the measured fuel pressure was below the specifications. Removed the injector control pressure regulator and found the regulator spring was compressed and weak. These test results verified the injector control pressure regulator was faulty.

Correction
Replaced the injector control pressure regulator and verified the vehicle operated properly. The customer’s concern did not return.
