Title
17953, Replaced Throttle Body

Complaint
The customer states the check engine light is on.

Cause
Connected a scan tool and found code 17953 – Throttle Valve Controller: Malfunction. Performed a visual inspection of the air intake system and found there were no obstructions and the air filter was correctly installed. Performed a visual inspection of the throttle body and found the throttle body had heavy carbon buildup between the throttle valve and the housing. Cleaned the throttle body with throttle body cleaner and observed the throttle valve still did not move smoothly. With the key on, engine off, used a multi-meter to check for the presence of voltage and ground at the electronic throttle control motor and found both were present. Disconnected the electronic throttle control motor and used the multi-meter to measure the resistance between its terminals. Found the measured resistance was out of specifications, which indicated the electronic throttle control motor was faulty. The electronic throttle control motor is integrated into the throttle body and is replaced as an entire unit.

Correction
Replaced the throttle body, cleared codes, performed a road test and verified the vehicle operated properly. The check engine light did not illuminate and no fault codes returned.
