Real Fixes from the SureTrackĀ® expert information resource are documented issues from actual shop repair orders and community discussions. SureTrack is currently available free with the purchase of a current Snap-onĀ® diagnostic software version.

Sometime we forget that the first place to start your diagnostics is the TSB library. SureTrack community member CESARS AUTO REPAIR had a Honda Accord in their shop that had a cold start rattle, they were headed down the path of changing timing chain components. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member Richard_C and others, they were able to resolve the issue quickly.

The following Community Fix summarizes the interaction between members of the community that led to the solution.

Vehicle
2010 Honda Accord LX 2.4L

Title
Rattle noise at startup, replaced VTC actuator.

Complaint
Customer complains that vehicle has engine rattle when started cold.

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Started engine cold and noted rattle noise that goes away within a few seconds. Checked oil level, which was correct, and performed oil change. Rattle noise still there in the morning. Will a timing chain kit with guides and tensioner take care of this problem? Are there any other things to look for?

Best Answer from Community Member Richard_C
Check the variable valve timing control (VTC) actuator as mentioned in Honda TSB 09-010.

Cause
Variable valve timing control (VTC) actuator was the issue.

Correction
Replaced VTC actuator and engine no longer rattles when first started cold.
