P049B00, Replaced Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve

Complaint
The customer states the check engine light is on.

Cause
Confirmed the customer complaint and found the check engine light was on. Connected a scan tool and found code P049B00 – Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR) “B” Flow Insufficient Detected. Used the scan tool to monitor live data and found that the exhaust gas recirculation valve parameter was not within specifications. Used the scan tool to repeatedly command the exhaust gas recirculation valve to open and close, monitored the valve position parameters on the scan tool, and found that the valve’s actual position parameter never matched the valve’s desired position parameter. Performed an inspection of the exhaust gas recirculation valve wiring harness and connectors, and found that there were no loose connections or signs of damage. With the key on and engine off, used a multi-meter to check for the presence of voltage and ground at the exhaust gas recirculation valve and found that both were present. Used the multi-meter to check for the presence of a short or open in the exhaust gas recirculation valve wiring harness and found that there were no shorts or opens present. Used the multi-meter to measure the resistance of the exhaust gas recirculation valve and found that the measured resistance was out of specification. This test result verified that the exhaust gas recirculation valve was faulty.

Correction
Replaced the exhaust gas recirculation valve, cleared codes, reset parameters, performed a road test, and verified that the vehicle operated properly. The check engine light did not illuminate and no fault codes returned.
