A 1.6L Ecoboost Ford Escape has plenty of power to get down the road, so it’s noticeable when you lose some oomph. SureTrack community member Nhaugen had a 2013 Ford Escape in the shop that lacked power and throttle response. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member DAG1365 and others, they were able to resolve the issue quickly.
The following Community Fix summarizes the interaction between members of the community that led to the solution.
Vehicle
2013 Ford Escape SE 1.6L
Title
Engine lacks power, replaced oil pump.
Complaint
Customer complains that vehicle lacks power and throttle response and doesn’t sound right.
Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Test drove vehicle and confirmed symptoms. Has a bit of a grumble at 800 RPM also has check engine light on with code P0014. Monitored Exh_angle_actual and exhaust_diff_angle PID. Difference ranges anywhere between 5 and 25 degrees. I believe it should stay around 0. Click tested exhaust VCT solenoid good. Checked base oil pressure hot @ 800rpm and had 8-10 psi (14.5 spec). Oil pressure @ 2000rpm is 20-25 psi (29 spec). No visible oil or coolant leaks. Oil level good, coolant level good. Customer has had to top of coolant, but not much. Just wondering if anyone has any pointers on the 1.6L. I was leaning towards phaser, but having the oil pressure not meeting spec I am now thinking about heading down that rabbit hole to find loss of oil pressure. Chain tensioner and oil pump I believe are chain driven on these. Any other ideas or expertise would be awesome.

If VCT unplugged desired angle stays at zero for all then timing components are still in time, would run flush thru system and put new oil in it, remove VVT solenoid and see if it is gummed up or screens gone. You may have pump or bad bearings causing low oil pressure due to not changing oil when they should.
Cause
Bad oil pump not keeping oil pressure high enough.
Correction
Replaced oil pump, test drove vehicle and it operates as it should.
