Title
283D, 2845, Replaced Exhaust Valve Timing Control Solenoid
Complaint
The customer states the check engine light is on.
Cause
Connected a scan tool and found codes: 283D – VANOS Exhaust Adaptation Stop and 2845 – VANOS, Exhaust Actuator Movement. With the key on, engine off, used a multi-meter to check for the presence of voltage in the exhaust valve timing control solenoid and found voltage was present. Used the multi-meter to measure the resistance of the exhaust valve timing control solenoid and found the measured resistance was within specifications. Backprobed the exhaust valve timing control solenoid, ran the engine, and monitored the solenoid control signal on a lab scope while varying the engine speed. Determined that the frequency of the exhaust valve timing control solenoid signal increased as the engine speed was raised, which indicated the powertrain control module was attempting to control the solenoid. Removed the exhaust valve timing control solenoid to perform a visual inspection, and found it was clogged with carbon, which caused the solenoid to seize.
Correction
Replaced the exhaust valve timing control solenoid, cleared codes, performed a road test and verified the vehicle operated properly.
