SureTrack Real Fix: Squeaky Hummer

exhaust gas recirculation valve, SureTrack Real Fixes

Comebacks are no fun. Especially when it is an intermittent noise that you can’t track down. SureTrack community member Jeffytune had a Hummer in the shop where they had replaced the front hubs that started squeaking a few days later. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member brad331 and others, they were able to resolve the issue quickly.

The following Real Fix summarizes the interaction between them in the community that led to the solution.

Vehicle
2007 Hummer H3 3.7L

Title
Squeak from left front, adjusted front skid plate.

Complaint
Replaced front hubs then a few days later it developed a squeak

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Replaced both front hub units with A/C Delco hub units (FW413). A few days later it started to squeak from the left front. We removed the wheel and raised it on the host, no noise. Took it for a test drive, it squeaks on turns and bumps. Right hand turn, loud, left hand turn quiet. We have replaced the left hub assembly twice now, we can not find any lose and worn, the brakes look fine and clean. All the clips and spring are in place (Match’s the right side). We checked the backing plate, we reset the clearance to make sure, no change.
After replacing it for the second time, we test drove it, all was good and quiet. 4 hours later, he calls back to say it’s doing it again. All torques were checked twice.

Happened to me! Drove me nuts. Wound up being loose front skid plates believe it or not!

Cause
Once the customer came back in. we found that the noise had changed quite a bit, it was far more intermittent and a different pitch. we found the lower skid plate was just touching the front bumper.

Correction
Repositioned the plate, and all is good now. Thanks everyone. JT
