Title
P0597-00, Replaced Engine Coolant Thermostat
Complaint
The customer states that the check engine light is on.
Cause
Confirmed the customer’s complaint and found the check engine light on. Connected a scan tool and found code P0597-00 – Engine Coolant Thermostat Cooling. Inspected the engine coolant level and condition, but found no faults. Ran the engine and used an infrared thermometer to measure the engine coolant temperature at the engine coolant thermostat housing inlet and outlet. The measured temperatures at the engine coolant thermostat housing inlet and outlet were identical and below the specified temperature, which indicated that the engine coolant thermostat had opened. Removed the engine coolant thermostat and allowed it to reach room temperature, visually inspected the engine coolant thermostat and found that it was stuck in the open position. These test results verified that the engine coolant thermostat was faulty.
Correction
Replaced the engine coolant thermostat, cleared codes, performed a road test, and verified that the vehicle operated properly. The check engine light did not illuminate and no fault codes returned.
