Title
P213B00, Replaced Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve

Complaint
The customer states the check engine light is on.

Cause
Connected a scan tool and found code P213B00 – Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR) Throttle Control Circuit “B” Range/Performance. Performed a road test using the scan tool to monitor live data and found the EGR parameter was erratic. With the key on and the engine off, I used the scan tool to repeatedly command the exhaust gas recirculation valve to open and close. Then monitored the valve position parameters on the scan tool, and found the valve’s actual position parameter never matched the valve’s desired position parameter.

Performed an inspection of the exhaust gas recirculation valve wiring harness and connectors, and found there were no loose connections or signs of damage. Again with the key on, engine off, used a multi-meter to check for the presence of voltage and ground at the EGR valve and found both were present. Used the multi-meter to check for the presence of a short or open in the exhaust gas recirculation valve sensor wiring harness and found there were no shorts or opens present. Used a set of fused jumper wires to repeatedly apply voltage and ground to the exhaust gas recirculation valve, and found the valve was inoperative. Used the multi-meter to measure the resistance of the exhaust gas recirculation valve and found the measured resistance was out of specifications. These test results verified the exhaust gas recirculation valve was faulty.

Correction
Replaced the exhaust gas recirculation valve, cleared codes, reset parameters, performed a road test and verified the vehicle operated properly. The check engine light did not illuminate and no fault codes returned.
